College guys find cheap beer for everyone in OC!

Leave it to a couple of college boys to come up with a website that tells Southern Californians where at any given moment we can find the 10 cheapest places to score beer in our hood.
Thriftybeer. com launched last week. Just go to the site and click on your city. It will bring up a list of the the 10 stores in your area where you can find the cheapest beer that day. Click on a store and it will show you the 10 cheapest beers for sale.
David Echanique, who is 25 and heading into his junior year at Cal State Fullerton, said his buddy Brandon McKenney, an Orange Coast College sophomore who is 23, came up with the idea for the site last year, but just for Fullerton (their hometown).
“I saw the bigger picture,” Echanique says. “We should do all of Southern California,” he told his friend.
The guys are, oddly enough, fans of Coors Lite. But they say they will take whatever is cheap. In the past, they have had to do like countless college kids before them: drive around looking for beer on sale. “We’d look online and wish there was a central database for this.”
David said they spent $2,000 on the site and researched 1,500 stores. “It was quite a task.” They vow to update the site daily for sales.
And they encourage everyone to drink responsibly. Take the money you’re saving on beer to get a cab.

Great, that is what we need. An article promoting the college kids to drink and for cheap right on the heels of a tragic drunk driving accident involving three 19 year old students. Slow news day, Lori Besheda? Maybe you should get up off of your butt and go find some news that is real news and not this garbage. I swear, every single reporter at this news site pisses me off. Either they write like they have a head injury or they write like they should be given one.

Although the article was not “jaw-dropping,” the ingenuity of college kids never ceases to amaze me. It was also mildly entertaining and informative and I will definitely use it! The post isn’t about promoting drinking or DUI or accidents, yet you pile it own in your own way. The post was about cheap beer!!!! Stick to the subject matter in the post and get a life. Find some cheap beer and drink up. Geez.

Hey HBRIDER, get a life.. If everyone on this site pisses you off, then don’t come here.. I think it’s a cool idea, lord knows when I was in college a site like this would have been great on those Friday and Saturday nights. I guess not all of us can’t be as perfect and all knowing as my HBRIDER… Lori I think from now on, you should run every single article you write by this guy to make sure it’s up to snuff.. god knows we wouldn’t want a lighter story once in a while rather than all the negative news going on.. i wish HBRIDER was in front of me so I could punch him square in his teeny tiny balls!

Nobody is promoting drunk driving here…..Just maybe these “kids” will save enough money on beer to afford to take a taxi home. This is a great service! Maybe hbrider should get off his butt and get out in the world instead of complain on the internet about reporters because he is jealous that he dropped out of college and never became one.
Look people, HBRIDER and I usually don’t see eye to eye but the point he’s making here is that given the recent high-profile and highly commented articles recently published by the OC Register, any editor with an ounce of sense would stop to consider the ramifications of the information made available by this website. Any person who can put two and two together can rightly surmise that based on what year of school these guys are in, in the article they are mentioned as sophomores with the intent to transfer to a 4-year school, they are likely not of legal drinking age. Before you jump all over me I’m not saying that someone has to be of legal drinking age to provide this kind of information. I also happen to think this article is highly inappropriate.
To HB BUM, Fullerton College is the local municipal college, the university is Cal. State Univ., Fullerton.
We are both of legal drinking age and explicitly state on our site that we do not encourage underage drinking nor drinking and driving. We encourage responsible drinking and remind people to always give your keys to someone else if you have had any alcohol. That being said, we are just trying to save people a little money.

ThriftyBeer does not condone drinking and driving, nor did it suggest anywhere in the post that they do. If you actually visit the Web site, you do have to input your date of birth to verify that you are over the age of 21 in order to use the services it provides. This Web site took a significant amount of time to develop and eventually launch. They are providing a service that beer-drinkers can enjoy.
The post also does not mention the creators’ ages, and yes, it is safe to assume that they are 19-20 years old based on their class. I think it was misleading for Lori to emphasize the fact that they are sophomores in college, because I know these guys and they are of legal drinking age.
either way if your not 21 and look at this site who cares. how the heck would you get the beer the post on the site??

sounds like a good business idea to me - providing information of value to a wide audience. many people purchase the product regularly and could potentially return to the site on a regular basis. easy for competition to do the same thing, but still plenty of ways to monetize this….
many close-minded people like “1person” and “hbrider’ like to project their own shortcomings on other people by making negative assumptions that fit only their perspective of the world based on limited information. for example:

The article mentions that the website was made by college kids. Nowhere does it say that the site is targeted towards college students. college students might be naturally drawn to an alcohol related site, but……………ah, i’m done elaborating..screw this…lost cause…

Eh, it’s a good idea (I guess) if you’re into drinking swill that calls itself Pabst or Budweiser. Just keep in mind that just because it’s cheaper, it never means that it’s better.

Great job guys, keep it up… ignore the jerks here, they weren’t loved as children and are bitter as adults.
I think it is a great idea. And who knows maybe they can expand on the idea and add other kinds of alcohol.
And if people are picking up their beer at a store then hopefully they will be taking it back home or to someone’s house. And hopefully if they are at a house they will be staying their instead of driving. This is way better than kids going out to a club or somewhere and drinking then trying to drive somewhere.
Oh yeah all fun and games. but if they had where to find the cheapest Cannabis at the nearest Medical Cannabis Collective everyone would be in an uproar..

Hey look I know David. He has been talking about this site for a long time. It’s funny to see that it’s actually out. I am both a US Marine and a college student and hey when your pinching pennies a site like this can help. It’s great knowing I am getting my beer from the cheapest place possible while on my drive home. I drink regularly and responsibly. This site is not telling me to go get drunk and jump behind the wheel of a car nor do I get feel any lapse in judgement while on the website to do so. Maybe in these days of an economic melt down there should be more sites like this one. Who says this needs to stop with beer. I would love to visit other sites like this one telling me where I could find the cheapist pizza or cereal. Well maybe not cereal bucause then people like hbrider might compain of my super suger rush while working. good job dave keep it up.
